Singapore: 2011-2012 Fulbright Visiting Research Grant

Overview

The United States Government is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 annual competition for three-month Fulbright Visiting Research Grants. These grants are for non-degree research for university faculty and professionals to develop their academic and professional expertise in collaboration with American colleagues. Younger faculty are encouraged to apply.

The research should be conducted any time between September 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012. The grant will cover round trip international airfare (economy class) on an American carrier, living, book and settling-in allowances.

As the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government, the Fulbright Program is designed, in the words of U.S. Government legislation, "to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." With this goal in mind, since its inception more than fifty years ago, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants with the opportunity to observe each other's political and economic institutions and cultures and to exchange ideas.

The objectives of the program are to enable recipients to pursue a particular field of study and to develop leaders who can contribute to promoting better understanding between the United States and Singapore.


Priority will be given to the social sciences and humanities as they relate to the United States and Singapore and the broader global society. Within the natural and applied sciences, only policy-oriented proposals or those with inter-disciplinary overlaps/implications related to program 2 and 3 below would be considered.

1. The United States - study of U.S. society and culture through such fields as history, government, international relations, economics, law, business, literature, intellectual history, sociology, religious pluralism, and cultural anthropology.

2. Challenges of Contemporary Society - comparative studies of contemporary civil society and social issues in Singapore and the United States. Subjects of particular interest include risk or crisis management issues, the impact of rapid technological development, (including challenges from the new media), finite resources, energy supply and environmental issues, transformation in educational systems, urbanization, gerontology and the family.

3. Transnational Issues of Global Society - study related to transnational issues. Subjects of particular interest include health policy, international trade, labor and mobility, migration, environmental policy, energy and demographic issues.

Eligibility

A. Applicants must be Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

B. Preference will be given to full-time lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors or professors with at least 5 years teaching experience at Singapore universities. Grantees are expected to continue to teach at Singapore universities upon their completion of the program. Individuals from non-profit organizations, especially in the areas of social services, with doctoral degrees or equivalent professional training or experience are eligible to apply.

C. Preference will be given to applicants with little or no experience in the United States.

D. Applicants below 55 years of age at the time of application are preferred.

E. Good health. Applicants selected for a Fulbright grant are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.

End-January 2011 - Notification of candidacy by Embassy.

March/April 2011 - Notification of candidacy by Fulbright Scholarship Board, Washington D.C.

May/June 2011 - Confirmation of affiliation.

September 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012 - Departure for the United States.

FIELD OF STUDY
European Union affairs, European integration or U.S. - E.U. relations.

VALUE

A monthly stipend of € 3000, plus a lump sum of € 2,000 for round-trip air transportation and relocation costs (up to a maximum of € 30,000 per grantee). Health and accident insurance and visa sponsorship (J visa category) are also provided.

NUMBER, TYPE & WHERE TENABLE

Eleven to thirteen awards for research and/or post-graduate study on EU affairs or US-EU relations at an accredited U.S. university or independent research center. Candidates are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and can request projects tenable in a maximum of two different US institutions;


Two to four one-semester awards for lecturing on EU affairs or U.S.-E.U. relations, integration, and political economy at a selected U.S. university. The successful candidates will be placed in an appropriate institution. Detailed information on the American universities requesting an EU Scholar-in-Residence is available in December.

DURATION

Minimum period of three (3) months;
Maximum period of 10 months.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates must:

- be citizens of the EU;
- be professionals (decision makers, policy makers, individuals in industry, the media, politics, academia and public administration);
- have at least two years of work -related experience beyond the bachelor's degree;
- have a doctoral degree or equivalent professional experience and at least two years of professional experience before departure for the United States (research candidate);
- have the necessary university credentials to be accepted into an American graduate program and two years of professional experience (student category);
- have academic/professional experience in at least two different E.U. countries;
- have personal qualities, a proven level of academic or professional excellence as well as outstanding records;
- be proficient in English.

Please note that current or retired officials of Community institutions are not eligible to apply.

Taiwan: Doctoral Dissertation Research in the U.S. Grants

Overview

The grants are designed to assist doctoral candidates at local universities in all academic fields in social sciences, humanities and the arts, to work a doctoral dissertation topic by consulting scholars, collecting data, and/or auditing courses at a U.S. university or research institution.

The duration of the grants ranges from six months to ten months. The grants may begin no earlier than August 1, 2011. They must end no later than August 31, 2012.

§ Grant Provisions and Conditions

All recipients of the grants must obtain admission to a U.S. university. They will receive the limited accident and medical insurance.

Recipients who receive funds from other sources are required to report such grants to FSE. If any of the Fulbright grant benefits are duplicated by the additional grant, the Fulbright grant may be reduced accordingly.

§ Benefits:

1. Monthly stipend between US$700 and US$1,500 for up to 10 months
2. Placement services by IIE
3. Possible placement in a three-week summer pre-academic program in the U.S., with all expenses paid

These grants are designed to provide an opportunity for scholars in all academic fields in social sciences, humanities and the arts, who received their doctoral degrees from Taiwan or other non-English speaking countries, to conduct research and establish scholarly contacts in the U.S.

The duration of the grants ranges from a minimum of three months to a maximum of ten months. The grants may begin no earlier than August 1, 2011 and no later than June 1, 2012. They must end no later than August 31, 2012.

§ Benefits:

Type C: Full Grant
A stipend of US$2,400 per month for a period no less than three months and non longer than 10 months
direct-flight, round-trip, economy-class air ticket

Type D: Partial Grant
A fixed sum ranging from US$2,000 to US$14,400 for a period no less than three months and no longer than 10 months

2. be affiliated full time with any organization in Taiwan for at least one year;

Yemen: Fulbright Post-Doctoral Research Scholar Fellowships

Overview

Fulbright Post-Doctoral Research Grants offer Yemeni scholars the opportunity of using a U.S. university's research facilities, libraries and laboratories to conduct individual research and/or develop a particular research project. Grants are usually from six to nine months. Preference is given to candidates who have not received their Ph.D. degrees from a U.S. university and/or conducted research for six months or more, during the past five years, in the U.S.

All applications are reviewed by a bi-national review committee comprised of U.S. officials and scholars in the field of specialization of the applicants. The review criteria include the quality of the research plan, appropriateness of academic background and adequacy of language ability. Applicants selected for an award will be nominated for affiliation with an appropriate U.S. institution.


Eligibility Requirements:

1. Yemeni citizenship
2. Doctoral degree or its equivalent.
3. Speak and understand English with enough facility to carry out proposed research.

Postdoc Genomic Biomarkers of Environmental Health, Netherlands

Overview

EnviroGenomarkers is a European FP7 research project aiming at the development and application of a new generation of biomarkers to study the role of environmental agents in human disease. The project concerns the large-scale application of –omics technologies in a population study aiming at: the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers predictive of increased risks of chronic diseases in which the environment may play an important role (breast cancer, Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, childhood diseases including allergy, neurological and immune diseases, thyroid disruption), the exploration of the association of such risk biomarkers with exposure to a number of high-priority or emerging environmental pollutants with carcinogenic, immunotoxic or hormone-line properties, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), cadmium, lead, phthalates, brominated flame retardants, ambient air pollutants and water treatment byproducts), the discovery and validation of biomarkers of exposure to the above environmental pollutants. Biomarker searches utilize state-of-the-art metabonomics, epigenomics, proteomics and transcriptomics, in combination with advanced bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. Exposure assessment utilizes established exposure biomarkers, questionnaires, modeling and geographic information systems (GIS)-technology as well as additional data derived from other projects.

IRAS at Utrecht University is responsible for the exposure assessment of the project. You will work in a multidisciplinary research team with epidemiologists, exposure assessors, biomedical scientist; and statisticians. Your activities will focus on exposure data analysis and modeling, and epidemiological analyses. The candidate will publish the findings as papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.


Eligible Candidates

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoc with a background in the field of environmental health sciences, epidemiology or equivalent. The candidate should have strong organisational, communication and writing skills (in English). We are looking for a team player who is able to work independently. Experience in the field of exposure assessment and/or environmental epidemiology research will be an advantage.

Healthy Ageing, Population and Society (HAPS) is an inter-faculty research programme, a collaboration of the Dept of Demography, Faculty of Spatial Sciences; the Dept of Epidemiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences / University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG); and the Dept of Sociology, Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. The research programme adopts an interdisciplinary and multi-level approach to healthy ageing, has a strong theoretical-basis and applies both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. At each participating department is one Postdoc researcher fully dedicated to the HAPS programme. Postdoc in Time-resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy

Overview

‘Molecular Movies of Protein Folding'

Within the Molecular Photonics Group a project sponsored by an ERC Starting Grant is carried out, aiming to develop and apply time-resolved vibrational spectroscopic methods for investigating protein folding.

Protein folding, the process by which a protein assumes its three-dimensional shape, is one of the basic unsolved problems of biophysical research. Many of the structural changes taking place during protein folding, especially during the early stages, are as yet poorly understood. In this research project, time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy will be used to study protein folding. We will trigger the folding, for instance by a temperature jump, and track the folding process in real time using one- and two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy in combination with site-specific labeling. This will make it possible to obtain a structurally and temporally resolved picture of protein folding, which can be regarded as a 'molecular movie' of the folding process.

Requirements

The candidate should have a relevant PhD degree and experience in time-resolved (preferably vibrational) spectroscopy and nonlinear optics.

Appointment

PhD Scholarship in The entertainization of childhood, Netherlands

Overview

The project focuses on the positive and negative effects of entertainment media on children and adolescents. It is funded by an Advanced Investigators grant awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) to Professor Patti M. Valkenburg. ERC grants are aimed to identify and fund the most excellent research in Europe.

The aim of the PhD project is to investigate the interplay between genetic disposition, environmental influences and media use on the cognitive development of children and adolescents. Specifically, the project will focus on the development of executive function, problem solving skills, and verbal and visuo-spatial skills.

Never before has media entertainment been so abundantly accessible to children and adolescents. Although media-effects research has developed in the past decade, we lack a decisive answer to many important questions. For example, is it beneficial to expose toddlers to the multitude of edutainment that claims to stimulate their cognitive abilities? Does playing video and computer games stimulate children's visuo-spatial and problem solving skills? If such effects occur, how can parents stimulate these effects? And if media and parents have positive (or negative) effects on children's cognitive development, do these effects hold for most children or only for those with a particular genetic disposition? The main aim of this PhD project is to provide initial answers to questions like these.


The project involves a longitudinal study among 900 Dutch families with two children between 2 and 14 years old. The recruitment of these families will be outsourced. The set-up and analyses of the project will be realized by an interdisciplinary team of four senior and three junior researchers from different disciplines, such as communication science, psychology, family studies, and pedagogy. All members of this team will collaborate closely with each other in all stages of the project. This way each individual researcher will benefit maximally from the expertise of other team members.

Tasks
The candidate is expected to do research and publish on the basis of the research. The candidate will also complete a PhD dissertation.

Requirements

The PhD candidate should:

■Hold a relevant Master's degree in behavioral, social, or medical sciences, preferably a Research Master's degree. Candidates who are due to graduate before 1 February 2011 are also welcome to apply.
■Have the ability and interest to work in a team.
■Have the skills to interact with scholars from different disciplines.
■Have advanced data analytic skills, preferably for analyzing longitudinal data.
■Be willing to become acquainted with the literature and methods of analysis of gene-environment interactions regarding the development of children's cognitive abilities.
■Have an excellent written and spoken command of English.
■Be able to speak Dutch.

New York City Urban Fellows Program

Overview

The Urban Fellows Program is sponsored by The City of New York and administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). The program is designed to introduce America's finest college students and graduates to local government and public service.

The Urban Fellows Program is a highly selective, nine-month fellowship which combines work in Mayoral offices and City agencies with an intensive seminar series that explores current urban issues impacting public policy. Program participants are diverse and come from all over the country to work in New York City.

After participating in an extensive interview process, New York City Urban Fellows are placed at an array of agencies across the City where they learn about public policy through a hands-on approach.
This knowledge is supplemented by a series of workshops that help promote a deep understanding of the structure of New York City government. The program seeks to ensure that every Urban Fellow comprehends the intricacies of City, State and Federal finance and the interaction between these levels of government.

During the year, these lessons are further enhanced by group trips to Washington D.C. and Albany, where Fellows meet face-to-face with representatives and policy-makers who help shape life in New York City.


Eligibility is based on when applicants achieve their undergraduate (BA, BS) degree from a four-year college. For the 2011-2012 program, we will only accept applications from candidates who:


-Receive(d) their bachelor’s degree between Spring 2009 and Spring 2011
-Can commit full-time to the nine-month Fellowship
-Agree to suspend any graduate study or outside work for the duration of the Fellowship

PhD candidate in Plankton Ecology

Overview

IBED collaborates with the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) and the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ) in the project ‘Primary production in the North Sea: changes in resource limitation and energy transfer'. The project is funded by the Sea and Coastal Research programme of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Within this project, IBED's research group Aquatic Microbiology (led by Prof. Jef Huisman) has a vacancy for a PhD candidate.

Tasks

Management measures against eutrophication have led to a reduction of phosphorus inputs into the North Sea, whereas nitrogen loads were much less reduced. This project aims to determine how changes in these nutrients affect the species composition of marine phytoplankton and their potential food quality for zooplankton. We will perform competition experiments under N-limited, P-limited and light-limited conditions with representative North Sea phytoplankton species. During these experiments, we will study changes in the biochemical composition (stoichiometry) of the phytoplankton, and will expose them to grazing by zooplankton. These laboratory findings will be compared against the plankton community composition predicted by a competition model and the species composition observed during several North Sea cruises. As phytoplankton provides the basis for the marine food web, this study is essential for our understanding of how changes in nutrient loading affect the North Sea ecosystem.

■At the end of the residency, the laureates are requested to send a brief report outlining their experience, their interaction with the local community and the benefits they derived from their stay. This testimony should also include samples of their work during the residency, which will be posted online in the Programme’s virtual gallery online. The Gallery will allow for the work of these artists to be displayed and available overtime.

A two-year Postdoc position in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry is available from January 1, 2011 at the Department of Chemistry, DTU. The position is funded by a grant from the Lundbeck Foundation.

Project

The aim of the project is to develop new methods for forming glycosidic linkages where the use of protecting groups is kept at a minimum. Today, oligosaccharide synthesis is severely hampered by the multiple steps that are necessary for manipulation of protecting groups on the glycosyl donor and the glycosyl acceptor. The project will exploit new methods for forming glycosidic bonds in a regioselective manner.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (preferably involving carbohydrates). Relevant experience with oligosaccharide synthesis will be a distinct advantage.

Denmark: Postdoctoral Position in Medicinal Chemistry

Overview

A postdoctoral position in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis is available immediately at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, University of Southern Denmark. The position is for one year, with the possibility of extension for a second year.

The relevant project involves design and synthesis of receptor ligands and development of new synthetic methods related to this. The Free Fatty Acid receptor 1 (FFA1/GPR40), which is implicated in regulation of insulin secretion and a potential new target for treatment of diabetes, will be central in the project.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry or a closely related field, thorough documented experience within organic synthesis, high motivation and excellent communication skills. An interest for molecular biology is an advantage. Some experience with molecular modelling would also be an advantage, but not a requirement.

The Phillips Foundation - Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship

Overview

This program's purpose is to recognize and assist outstanding young undergraduate student activists for the cause of freedom, American values, and constitutional principles. A renewable scholarship shall be awarded to help defray college expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, and related costs.

Eligibility. Applicants shall be U.S. citizens enrolled and in good standing as full-time students in accredited, 4-year degree-granting institutions in the U.S. or its possessions, shall have successfully completed the first year (i.e., freshman year) of studies before being eligible for consideration, and can apply for an award after having commenced the second (i.e., sophomore) year of studies. Students in their third (i.e., junior) year may apply for a one-time scholarship for the senior year. Students at two-year schools may apply as juniors for a one-time award for the senior year upon transfer to a four-year institution. The nature of this scholarship is merit-based rather than need-based. However, evidence of financial need will be taken into consideration.

Application. Students may apply directly or may be nominated by a third party. All applications must be postmarked by January 15 (or next business day if the 15th is a Sunday or Holiday) and include the following:

a. Certification from the registrar, dean of students, or other appropriate official that the applicant is currently enrolled as a full-time student, is in good standing (i.e., not subject to academic or disciplinary sanction) and is or will be at the start of the next term, quarter or semester carrying at least the minimum number of academic hours necessary to remain enrolled and qualified as a full-time student. Note: This is not the same as a transcript. It is a separate document verifying that you are a bonafide student.

Postdoctoral Position – Antibiotic Resistance Mechanisms in Bacteria

PhD Scholarships in Plankton Ecology / Microbial Ecology

Overview

Within IBED, the research group Aquatic Microbiology, led by Prof. Jef Huisman, received a TOP grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for the project 'Effects of rising CO2 concentrations on resource competition in plankton communities'.

Climate change scenarios predict that atmospheric CO2 concentrations will double by the end of this century. Phytoplankton species utilize CO2 for photosynthesis, accounting for almost 50% of the world's carbon fixation. Yet, theory capable of predicting changes in phytoplankton species composition in response to rising CO2 is still in its infancy. Therefore, this project aims to develop such theory, using a combination of mathematical models, laboratory experiments and field studies.

Our research team consists of three senior scientific staff, two lab technicians, and a varying number of externally funded PhD students and postdocs.

Tasks

This PhD project will focus on competition experiments and field studies in which different phytoplankton species compete for inorganic carbon. The competition experiments will be carried out in laboratory-built chemostats, at different CO2 concentrations. The experimental results will be compared with theoretical predictions of a competition model recently developed by our research team. The insights obtained from these lab studies will be validated by monitoring of dynamic changes in phytoplankton species composition and inorganic carbon availability in lakes.

Appointment

The start date is early 2011. The full-time appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD student is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates. The full-time gross monthly salary will range from €2,042 in the first year to €2,612 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scales for PhD students. Postdoc 'Large Scale Distributed Computing for Multiscale Biomedical Applications'

Overview

We offer a two year postdoctoral position in the field of large scale computing for biomedical applications, located in the Computational Science research group of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. The position is part of MeDDiCa, a large European research project in the field of medical devices for cardiovascular applications. The aim of the research is to explore large scale distributed computing in the domain of multiscale biomedical simulations, exploiting high-end infrastructures as offered by PRACE and EGI.

MeDDiCA is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network sponsored by the European Commission. This network consists of 16 partners from all over Europe. MeDDiCA (Medical Devices Design in Cardiovascular Applications) investigates, through modelling and simulation, percutaneous stent devices and artificial heart valves. The research is multidisciplinary, ranging from medicine and biology to physics, engineering and computational science. The research at the University of Amsterdam is focussed on multiscale modelling and simulation, as well as large scale distributed multiscale computing. You will be working with three PhD students (supervising one), and another postdoc, forming a team working on multiscale modelling and simulation in the domain of the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH). Being embedded in the seminal well-recognized VPH research the work on MeDDiCA offers opportunities to establish sustainable collaborations with the diverse research groups in this framework.


Tasks

You will investigate and apply large scale distributed computing in the domain of multiscale biomedical simulations, exploiting high-end infrastructures as offered by PRACE and EGI. In previous projects we developed a multiscale model for in-stent restenosis that contains four coupled models for blood flow, smooth muscle cell proliferation, drug diffusion, and thrombus formation as well as a separate simulation to set up initial conditions. Running such coupled models in three dimensions under realistic settings requires the use of high performance computing capabilities. You will research the novel paradigm of Distributed Multiscale Computing, ranging from the theory of multiscale coupling to implementational aspects, and apply it to challenging applications in the biomedical domain, as being worked on in the MeDDiCA project.

The research will focus on:

■Establishing a universal distributed multiscale simulation environment on large scale European e-Infrastructures (PRACE, EGI), in collaboration with the MAPPER project, resulting in a high-quality open source tool for the VPH community and beyond
■A prototypical three dimensional simulation for in-stent restenosis in this environment
■3D simulations of in-stent restenosis investigating new stent designs
■Extend the distributed multiscale simulation environment to other multiscale simulations within the MeDDiCA project

Requirements

Candidates should have a PhD degree in Computational Science, Computer Science, Computational Physics, Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines. Applicants should have a proven track record in large scale computing. Direct experience with Grid computing is not required, but candidates should have a strong affinity with such modes of distributed computing. Experience in the biomedical field is not immediately needed, but a strong interest is required. Candidates should form a bridge between the HPC community and the Biomedical engineering community, and should therefore be capable to ‘speak both languages', and should be willing to publish both in Computational Science journals as well as Biomedical Engineering journals. Candidates should be able to work in an international multidisciplinary team. Moreover, given the nature of the MeDDiCA project, the candidate should be willing to participate in all project related networking activities. 2 PhD candidates at The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR)

Overview

'Transition to parenthood: International and national studies of norms and gender division of work at the life course transition to parenthood (APPARENT)'

The project is directed by Dr Daniela Grunow and financed by the European Research Council (ERC) in the framework of an ERC Starting Grant.

The project assesses contemporary parenting norms and practices and their diffusion in six European countries. The international collaboration includes Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Poland. The project develops a comparative framework to study prevalent motherhood and fatherhood norms, images, identities and behaviour in current societies. The focus is on how mothering and fathering is constructed by professionals, welfare states, and popular media, and will assess how cultural and institutional norms and images are perceived and realized by expecting and new parents.

In 4 subprojects this study investigates (1) How standards of 'good' mothering and fathering are perceived, shaped and disseminated by professionals (gynaecologists, midwives, family councils); (2) How welfare states, labour markets and family policies target at mothers and fathers roles as earners and care givers, and how this has changed in recent decades; (3) How images of mothers and fathers roles have been portrayed in print media from 1980 until 2010; (4) How (expecting) mothers and fathers perceive, embody and represent parenting norms and images in their own work and family roles; (5) How new parents divide paid and unpaid work and how these divisions shape career patterns over the life course; (6) How these patterns differ cross-nationally.


This project will be guided by the following central research questions:

1. What do contemporary motherhood and fatherhood norms look like? How are norms and images of male and female parenting roles evolving and changing in recent European societies? What are the central mechanisms and institutions involved in the creation and dissemination of parenting norms and standards?

2. How do expecting and new parents in different European countries perceive the standards created by medical and social experts, welfare states, and popular media, and to what extent do they embrace and live these standards? When do legal options to share care and paid work become 'real' options for new parents?

The aim of this project is to develop a contemporary sociology of adult sex roles and parenting norms: A theory of the social creation of parenting norms and a comprehensive framework to study empirically the change of men's and women's roles, identities and practices as earners and care givers in the early phase of family formation. The project is methodologically innovative in its aim to combine diverse quantitative and qualitative longitudinal data and methods. By combining expert interviews, policy analysis and content analysis of print media with analyses of qualitative and quantitative data on (nascent) parents, the four subprojects will address the diverse layers associated with changing gender roles and parenting norms over the adult life course.

Tasks and requirements:

PhD Project 1: Apparent NEWS - Portraying new parents in the paper

The main objective of this project is to look at the way new fathers and mothers have been represented in mass print media in all six countries, and how the apparent change of gender roles and parenting norms over the past decades came about. This project will consist of quantitative content analysis of advertisements and editorial content in mainstream and leftist daily news papers, between 1980 and 2010. It will compare not only cross-nationally, but also over time how parenting norms and standards - as disseminated in the media - have changed and whether these images converged across countries. A second objective of this project is to identify contemporary national profiles of 'good' mothers and fathers in the media, and to compare them with the features identified in the other subprojects, and also with the features of the traditional male breadwinner and female homemaker norm as portrayed in the 1950s. The study will also assesses which aspects of parenting these images address; how in particular fathers roles as carers and mothers roles as earners are portrayed; whether differences emerge (or diminish) between the 'life style' discourse of parenting in feuilletons, and the policy-related discourse in politics sections. This subproject will require development of a codebook that will capture quantifiable variables.

PhD Project 2: Apparent ACTS - Actualizing new parenthood in everyday life

This project aims study how expectant and new parents perceive and embody the images, norms and ideals disseminated by health care professionals and by newspapers. It will assess under which conditions these norms about motherhood and fatherhood are perceived as important and when couples look for orientation elsewhere. Also, it will be studied if normative frames change after the birth of the child. Interviews with nascent parents (heterosexual cohabiting/married couples) (a) a few months before the expected birth of their first child and, (b) about one year after the birth, will be analyzed in comparative perspective, in collaboration with foreign researchers in all six countries. For some countries these data will be available already at the beginning of the project (Ger, Swe, Nl, It). This third project will deeply engage with gathering comparable qualitative data for Poland and the Czech Republic.

Tasks:

The Postdoc/Researcher will contribute to research projects in the areas of analysis and modelling of the variability and the predictability of wind power. This research area has high importance for planning and operation of power systems with large scale wind power production. WES is leading several projects where development of these models are key elements, and with the ambitious plans for onshore and offshore wind power development in Denmark, EU and worldwide, more projects are expected.

Applications are invited for an NDRC funded 2-year postdoctoral research and development position within the School of Computer Science and Statistics to work on PaJR, a collaborative research project on building software for patient self management of chronic illness.

The Postdoctoral role will involve identifying patterns in patient narrative text and triggering appropriate actions.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Computational Linguistics, or a closely related discipline, such as Computer Science together with demonstrable expertise in as many of the following as possible:

- corpus linguistics,
- sentiment analysis,
- formal semantics,
- machine learning.

The project requires an individual who is well versed in theoretical issues that impinge on the work, but who also appreciates the pragmatic value of eclectic, practical solutions. Overview

Sauvé Scholars are highly motivated independent thinkers 30 years old or less with demonstrated skills as agents of change, who are offered a unique opportunity to spend nine months away from their studies, careers or other formal commitments, for a period of reflection and self-realization – both personal and professional.

In August of each year, up to 14 young men and women from around the world gather in Montreal – one of North America’s most vibrant international, multicultural cities – to embark on a rewarding personal and intellectual program combining reflection, study, travel and community engagement along with participation in conferences, seminars, cultural and sports events.

The academic home of the Sauvé Scholars is internationally-renowned McGill University, in the heart of Montreal, where the student body of about 33,000 includes students from some 160 countries. Through a formal Memorandum of Understanding, Sauvé Scholars enjoy a unique status at McGill: they may audit courses at the undergraduate or post-graduate level (but not for credit) and may participate in the array of university activities and facilities for every taste and interest.

INITIATING AN APPLICATION

Once you have successfully submitted the Basic Information Form, you will automatically receive an E-mail from the Sauvé Scholars Selection Committee confirming that you have initiated an Application. That E-mail will contain your Applicant Code, the Application Form, which you, the Applicant, must complete and submit, the Nomination Form, which must be completed by someone who is not related to you and who knows you in an academic, professional or personal capacity, as well as further instructions about the First Stage of the Application Process.

Nominators must submit the Nomination Form and Applicants must submit the Application Form, including four Personal Statements. All materials may be submitted in English or French.

The Nomination Form must be completed and submitted by the individual who nominates the Applicant to be a Sauvé Scholar. This person may be a teacher/professor, colleague/ mentor/ peer or anyone else chosen by the Applicant, but may not be a member of his/her immediate family. The Nomination Form includes instructions for the Nominator on how to submit the completed form electronically. Please note that the Selection Committee looks for clear, concise and compelling personal statements, as Candidates are chosen on the basis of (1) what they have accomplished and (2) what they propose to do during the course of the Program. c) INDIVIDUAL PROJECT PROPOSAL (maximum 500 words)
The Individual Project is a central element of the Sauvé Scholars Program. Please provide a clear and concise statement about what you plan to achieve — personally, professionally and/or academically — during the course of the Program and explain how it relates to your past experience and to your Vision of Change.

d) STATEMENT OF COLLECTIVE LIVING AND LEARNING (maximum 500 words)
The living experience is an integral part of the Sauvé Scholars Program. Please explain why you would like to live in a community of Scholars and what you think it would bring you at this stage in your life, and what you think you could contribute to the living and learning experiences of your fellow Scholars.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS

The deadline for receiving all completed First Stage application materials (both the Nomination Form and the Application Form, including any accompanying documents) is MIDNIGHT on Monday, November 1, 2010.

NOTIFICATION

Those candidates who qualify for the second stage of the Application Process will be notified by the end of December. Up to 50 candidates may be selected for the second round. Candidates who have not been retained will be notified at the same time. Those Candidates who wish to re-apply to the Program at a later date may do so one more time only, provided they still meet all of the eligibility criteria, including the age restrictions.

SECOND STAGE OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS

In the second stage of the Application Process, Candidates who have been short listed must submit the following documents in support of their candidacy:

THIRD STAGE OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS

During the third stage of the Application Process, some candidates may be invited to participate in a telephone interview with one or more members of our Selection Committee. In certain parts of the world, where the Program has associates or collaborators nearby, Candidates may have the opportunity of an in-person meeting.

During this third and final Stage of the Application Process, for those whose mother tongue is not English, there may be a requirement to take a test through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The test is given every year in 120 countries and measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. Some applicants may be asked by the Selection Committee to take this test.

NOTIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

In April 2011, successful candidates will receive an Offer Letter that includes the Terms and Conditions of the Award (See How the Program Works). Please note that no deferral of the Award to a subsequent year is permitted. Candidates who wish to re-apply to the Program at a later date may do so one more time only, provided they continue to meet all of the eligibility criteria, including the age restrictions. Successful Candidates must be in possession of a valid passport with expiry date of no less than six months after the end of the Award period (i.e. November or later), and are required to forward a photocopy of their passport showing the expiry date with their acceptance of the Offer.

Candidates at that time must also submit a Medical Certificate. The Medical Certificate is a letter from a physician confirming that the candidate is in good health, with specific mention of any and all pre-existing and/or chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, etc. As Sauvé House, where the Scholars live, is a Montreal heritage building, regrettably it is not currently designed to accommodate persons with special needs.

At the time of their acceptance of the Offer, all non-Canadian citizens or permanent residents are also required to formally agree to leave Canada at the end of the Program. Immediately upon receipt of each Candidate’s acceptance, arrangements for required visas and travel will be made by the Foundation. Each successful candidate will be requested to submit a photo and brief biographical notes for circulation amongst their fellow Scholars and for posting on the Website.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROGRAM

Scholars must arrive in Montreal in mid-August in order to fully participate in all Orientation activities prior to the commencement of the academic year. They are encouraged to arrive several days earlier in order to acclimatize and explore their new surroundings.
