African Research Fellowship at London School of Economics (LSE)

Overview

The Africa International Affairs Programme at LSE IDEAS invites applications for the new African Research Fellowship

Applicants

Applicants should be established African scholars in the field of international affairs and security studies sciences with experience of research on Africa. Applicants should hold a PhD or comparable qualifications and experience – the fellowship is not intended for students registered for a degree or diploma, nor is it intended for senior academics.

About the Fellowship

The Fellowship will be for a period of up to four months during the 2011-12 academic year, and will be based at IDEAS at the LSE.

The Fellow will be expected to engage in research on a topic under one of the following themes:

- Africa's role in global security

- Africa states and the SAARC region (includes India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka)

- African foreign and economic policies


Preference will be given to topics that focus on Africa and contemporary international relations and security concerns of Africa and the external powers.

The Fellowship is open to candidates from Africa (AU countries) and it is desirable that applicants are currently employed by a higher education institution, or working in a research capacity in Africa.

The Fellow will be expected to finish a piece of research of publishable quality during their stay and make a presentation at a seminar or lecture arranged by the African International Affairs Programme at LSE IDEAS.

Application Details

The submission deadline for applications is 1st September 2011.

Application should include

- one page covering letter

- curriculum vitae of no more than three pages

- outline of proposed research of no more than four pages

- names, addresses, and email contact details, of two referees familiar with their work, to be contacted by Professor Thandika Mkandawire, Chair of African Development at the LSE and the Chairman of the selection committee.
