Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship

Overview

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship is a scholarship system that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology offers. As the scholarship is divided into“Domestic Selection” available after coming Japan, “University Recommendation” and “Embassy Recommendation” available before coming Japan , requirements and application period also differ.


(1) Domestic selection

By this scholarship system, the Japanese Government selects self-supported students who are already enrolled in a university in Japan.
There are two classifications, one is “Undergraduate Students (undergraduate-level)” and the other is “Research Students (graduate-level)”.
Please ask for details at the Division of International Services (ISC Office).

Application requirements(Undergraduate Students)
1. Applicants must be a self-supported student who is enrolled, or will be enrolled, in his/her final year of studies as an undergraduate as of April 1st of the year from which the scholarship commences.
2. Applicants must have the nationality which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese Government

(Research Students)
1. Applicants must be self-supported students who are enrolled, or will be enrolled, in a graduate school as a regular students on April 1st of the year from which the scholarship will commence.
2. Applicants must have the nationality which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese Government

     Non-regular Students(Kenkyusei) ¥150,000/month
     Master Course Students ¥152,000/month

*Undergraduate Students and Research Students who go to upper course can apply to have their scholarship extended. The extension will be decided by MEXT after careful selection.




(2) University recommendation

Students coming to a Japanese university from their own country can apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship through the university in Japan which they intend to enroll in.
University recommendation is only for Research Students (graduate-level), and Undergraduate Students (Undergraduate-level) are ineligible.
Please ask for application details at the Student Exchange Office.

Application requirements1.Applicant must be coming to Japan from overseas as graduate-level students and enrolling in a graduate school.
2.Applicants must have the nationality which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese Government
3.Applicant must be under 35 years of age as of October 1st of the year from commencement of scholarship

(3) Embassy recommendation

 Students coming to a Japanese university from their own country can apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
 Please inquire of your nearest Japanese Embassy (or Consulate) In details, classification, necessary documents, procedure for applying, and so on.
